Arise News Television presenter Rufai Oseni has defined why he considers the Federal Government’s current petrol value discount a reintroduction of gas subsidy.
DAILY POST studies that the Federal Government, on October 8, introduced a 30-day petrol value discount at Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) filling stations nationwide.
The transfer has attracted criticism from opposition figures, who accused the President Bola Tinubu-led administration of subtly reintroducing the gas subsidy eliminated on May 27, 2023.
In a video clip posted on his official X deal with on Saturday, Oseni argued that foregoing earnings on a product for a particular function quantities to a type of subsidy.
He mentioned, “I’ve been seeing plenty of ignorance being unfold. Don’t allow them to deceive you. What the federal government did was a return of gas subsidy.
“With their lies of NNPC discount, it is nonetheless a subsidy. Whenever you forfeit your revenue, you could have subsidised the product as an incentive. Somebody made a video to say that N60 can’t be a subsidy. Even if it is N10, so long as it is a forfeit of your revenue, it’s a type of subsidy.
“You can put subsidies in some ways to achieve market benefit. If you’re producing one thing, you’ll be able to resolve to subsidise the value to have the ability to get market benefit.
“Secondly, there was another production subsidy that was announced or proposed in that press conference, where they talked about the proposal to sell the cap price of crude oil to refiners for a certain period of time.”
