The federal authorities has attributed the rising world demand for transformers to rising electrical energy wants pushed by synthetic intelligence (AI) and knowledge centres, warning that Nigeria should plan forward to safe vital tools for its transmission infrastructure.
The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, disclosed this whereas responding to questions from State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) assembly presided over by President Bola Tinubu on the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Tegbe defined that high-capacity transformers, significantly 300-megavolt-ampere (MVA) models, had been specialised tools that would not merely be bought off the shelf.
According to him, the transformers require customized manufacturing, a course of that sometimes takes between three and 6 months.
“300 MVA transformers are specialised, high-capacity equipment that cannot simply be purchased off the shelf,” the minister mentioned.
He added that the rising electrical energy necessities of AI infrastructure and knowledge centres had intensified world demand for transformers, making it essential for Nigeria to plan its procurement properly upfront.
“There is currently strong global demand for transformers, partly driven by the growing electricity needs of artificial intelligence and data centres,” Tegbe mentioned.
“Nigeria must therefore plan ahead to secure the equipment required for its transmission infrastructure.”
The minister famous that some Nigerian corporations, together with Skipper Steel, had the capability to fabricate or assemble transformers. However, he defined that the specialised nature of 300MVA transformers meant that their manufacturing required extra time and planning.
On energy tools stranded on the nation’s ports, Tegbe mentioned the federal government was working with related authorities to clear containers that had remained on the ports for greater than 20 years.
He clarified that the containers weren’t empty, explaining that they contained tools whose situation wanted to be assessed earlier than selections may very well be taken on their deployment.
“Regarding the containers at the ports, these are not empty containers. Some have remained there for more than 20 years,” he mentioned.
According to the minister, the federal government intends to retrieve the tools and interact specialists to find out which gadgets can nonetheless be used.
“We intend to clear them in collaboration with the relevant authorities, bring the equipment in, and engage experts to assess its condition,” he mentioned.
Tegbe added that out of date tools could be recognized for applicable motion, whereas gadgets discovered to be helpful could be repaired or refurbished and deployed for appropriate functions.
“Where equipment is obsolete, we will determine the appropriate action. Where it remains useful, we will repair or refurbish it and deploy it for the appropriate purposes,” he mentioned.
